1990 Cleft Lip And Palate Project (Sri Lanka Great Ormond Street Hospital)
Dissected a neonate head to see if it was possible to find a new surgical approach to repair a cleft palate. The project was succcessful and a personal highlight very close to The Anatomist's heart. The project was a solo operation and special because Sri Lanka has the highest instance of children born with cleft palates and cleft lips. A dissection was done in order to show surgeons the best way to operate on this type of condition. The project made a big difference to how cleft palate surgery was carried out in Sri Lanka and was very successful. The cleft palate surgery actually isn't a new phenomenon as it can be traced back to the 1st century AD where the first repair of cleft palettes would in fact use a little piece of wood. Applied knowledge and experience provided a solution for a problem dating back 2000 years.
